The case for replacing mechanical keys with Bluetooth access control is not a matter of convenience. It is a matter of operational control.
For a private home, a traditional key is adequate. For a building with multiple tenants, changing staff, contractor access, and a requirement to know who entered and when — a mechanical key system has structural limitations that no amount of key management can fix.

Where traditional key systems fail at scale
Lost or unreturned keys
A lost key in a mechanical system creates a decision: ignore the risk, or re-core the lock. Re-coring is expensive, disruptive, and is often deferred. The result is a building where access rights are assumed rather than known.
In a Bluetooth system, a lost or unreturned credential is revoked in iBlue Cloud. The hardware does not change. There is no cost beyond the administrator’s time.
Staff turnover
High-turnover environments — hospitality, facility management, construction sites — require frequent changes to who holds access rights. With physical keys, this means tracking issued keys, chasing unreturned copies, and periodically auditing the key register.
With iBlue, access rights are managed in iBlue Cloud. A departing employee’s credential is deactivated. A new employee receives a new one. No hardware is touched.
Contractor and temporary access
Giving a contractor access to a building for a defined period is operationally difficult with a mechanical key. You either issue a key and hope for its return, or arrange for someone to be present to let them in and out.
iBlue supports time-limited access: a credential active between 08:00 and 17:00 on specified dates only. The contractor is never in possession of a physical key, and access expires automatically.
Compliance and audit
Some sectors require a record of who accessed which area and when. Mechanical key systems cannot provide this. iBlue Cloud logs every access event — device, credential, timestamp — and that data is available for review or export.
Where mechanical keys remain appropriate
A mechanical key is appropriate where:
- A single user controls a single access point
- There is no requirement for remote management or audit
- The installation environment is not compatible with battery-powered electronic hardware (extreme temperatures, non-standard door types)
- Budget does not support electronic access control
For residential single-door applications with one or two occupants, a smart lock adds features but may not justify the operational overhead. iBlue hardware is specified most often for commercial, hospitality, and multi-unit residential applications.
What iBlue does not offer
iBlue Smart Locks have no mechanical key bypass. This is a deliberate design decision. A bypass cylinder creates a vulnerability: anyone with a pick or a copy of the emergency key can enter, regardless of the electronic system.
The consequence is that power failure planning is relevant. iBlue Smart Locks are battery-powered. A device that loses power requires battery replacement before access is restored. For critical access points, this should be accounted for in the specification — monitoring battery status via iBlue Cloud and establishing a replacement protocol.
